Chief,

I know this sounds dumb and im trying to bring change to our department as well, but basic topics seem to be key. Theres nothing more annoying to me then haveing members who dont know how to properly use the equipment provided or its location on the rig. We all know you gotta put the wet stuff on the red stuff but what handline to pull, why smooth bore or fog, Even what all task need done. I know it sounds simple, and im not sure how many calls a year your department runs a year but if you would like a format i came up with feel free to e-mail me at firefighter5_18@yahoo.com

Sincerely
Lt. Roth

We recently did a drill put on by our EMS side. We went through all the compartments on the ambulance, whats stored where, what it does, when they might need it. They tested us by asking us to retrieve items at random from the ambulance. Given that 75% of the calls most of our departments run are EMS related it was a good refresher.

Another thing we do to keep things fresh is bring in instructors from neighboring departments. Everybody teaches things a little different, everybody has a different body of experience to draw upon.

i have done this for my dept. i contact new home development and got the okay to go into the new houses and take pictures of the flooring the rafters. then got some of the scrapes that are laying around the job site and showed them of at drills. you can also get the floor plans and the streets in the develpoment also.

Start a relationship with local insurance agents, contractors and residential home remodel folks. Depending on your city policies (injury risk insurance), these people can give you info on homes/buildings to be demolished or remodeled. This gives you the opportunity for realistic training utilizing all fire ground applications. The troops like the realism, and those providing the buildings love to see what we do.

I would like to add one or two that seem to get overlooked in our department. First is proper radio protocol, knowing when to talk, what to say, and how to say it properly. Proper radio work can save alot of time on the fireground, there is no reason to say something on the radio that could be said face to face where possible. Also, properly addressing of the person you are trying to reach, say their name or title first and then say who is calling ie, "operations from interior" or "FF 34 from FF 19" this way they will hear who is calling them and they won't have to ask (don't forget to wait for your mic to key up).
Secondly, personal safety and self-rescue. As a member of a RIT team, we constantly stress self-survival and personal rescue. You should be able to free yourself so you don't need to be rescued, however there are times where you can't free yourselfand you will need to be rescued. Most guys in small departments don't train enough to have these tools in their mind or don't train on this at all. I was always told that if you don't learn it you can't use it. The firefighters should have self-survival skills in their heads so they can fall back on them.
